The Ace G. Pilkington Memorial Scholarship is an academically competitive award open to declared History majors and Social Sciences Composite Teaching majors whose program is governed by DSU catalog requirements in place before fall 2019. The scholarship was established through a gift from Dr. Ace G. Pilkington (1951-2019), a professor of History and English at DSU from 1978-2019; the scholarship is awarded in his memory.
All applicants must be at a minimum of good academic standing when they apply. This competition consists of two separate awards:
– The Pilkington Emerging Scholar Award, awarded to an underclassman (freshman or sophomore) having yet to achieve junior status who demonstrates considerable promise in the discipline. Students applying for this award will submit a 250-300 word personal statement reflecting their interest in studying history and in DSU’s program. The statement must also address their professional goals. Students applying for this award must also submit a writing sample reflecting work completed in one of their DSU courses but not necessarily a History course. Grade point average will also be taken into consideration when awarding this prize.
– The Pilkington Essay Prize, awarded to the best non-capstone research paper written by a History major in an upper-division DSU History course taken within the previous calendar year. Applicants must have attained junior status upon applying for this award.
